Born and raised in Vancouver, Janet’s background is varied. She has a Commerce degree from
UBC, and a background in accounting. Her first career began at age 9 in television, oddly
enough, while her second focus was in business, residential construction and real estate. The last 21 years, however, she has immersed herself in her family business, Merridale Cidery and
Distillery which she operates with her husband and eldest son. Merridale has been described as a delicious destination that is home to a cidery, distillery, eatery, farmhouse store, and even two
orchard-side yurts. The company wholesales their craft cider, and spirits, as well as their
Merridale Makes food line. In the orchard, they host unique special events that range from large
tasting events and outdoor musical performances to intimate elegantly rustic gatherings.
Janet believes that Merridale’s success is best achieved by promoting the growth of the
community as a whole, in a viable and sustainable way, and then distinguishing Merridale within
it. Her love for the community, family and dogs, as well as a strong belief in sustainability, is
woven into Merridale’s business philosophy as well as her personal life. She is a mother of 3
and a grandmother to two – the most important job she has had by far.
Janet has served on a number of boards, including those in agriculture, business, and tourism.
She’s currently president of Tourism Cowichan and a director on the Tourism Victoria and
Tourism Vancouver Island Boards. Janet is a strong believer in the power of mentorship. She
often jokes that it’s selfishly motivated, because she gets as much out of it as she gives.
